information into a computer system that is shared by others
PRIVACY - you will probaby want to ensure that the internet merchant has
a "Privacy Statement" - this will outline in detail the information
the merchant plans to elisit from you and how it will be used.
SECURE transaction pages that ask for your credit card information will
begin with "https:" in the URL at the top of your screen in the
address bar. Look for it before you fill in your card information.
READ the terms of sale carefully - what are the return options, is there
delivery charges, what is the product guarantee.
PRINT a copy of your order, a copy of the confirmation
RECORD the web merchants address and contact information
CONFIRM the charges to your credit card are correct - these may not show
up for up to 72 hours.
FTC about shipping - If the seller cant ship the goods within a
stated or 30-day deadline, the seller must notify you, then give you a chance
to cancel your order.
INSPECT your delivery as soon as you receive it. Contact the seller in
writing, as soon as possible if you discover a problem.
CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS are the safest mode of payment on the internet -
there are many security protections and consumer protections in place in the
U.S.A. and Canada for credit card use. If you are still uncomfortable using
your card for internet purchases, then you may want to consider a second lower
limit credit card just for your internet shopping. Regardless, you will want to
check the card purchases regularly, always, whether your card is used for
internet shopping purchases or not.
